Leave early to beat Nairobi traffic and midday heat. Use Mai Mahiu Road via the escarpment. Great Rift Valley viewpoint stop for photos. Arrive Mt Longonot Gate, 7:45am start hike, gate to Crater Rim is 3.1km, the first section can be dusty, wide trail with moderate incline. Last 1km to the rim is steep with loose gravel — the “vertical challenge.” Pole pole. Wildlife: zebras, giraffes, buffaloes often seen. Steep ascents/descents around the jagged rim. Highest point is at the far end. Once at the rim, many hikers opt to do the 7.2 km loop around the crater. This adds an extra 2 to 3 hours to the hike, but offers stunning panoramic views of the Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha. Going down is fast but use a stick. Drive to a Naivasha hotel for lunch or have some packed lunches as you drive Back to Nairobi, arriving before darkness. Drop off at your hotel or JKIA for your onward flight.
